CLERMONT INSIGHTS – June 2019

INTERVIEW WITH TANYA SCANTLEBURY

Location: Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands
Current role: Director
One word that best describes how you work: Resourceful
Interview with Tanya Scantlebury

  1. Born and educated in London, what attracted you to working in the BVI?
I had actually fallen in love with the Caribbean and “island life” after multiple trips visiting close friends on another Caribbean island. The BVI was a perfect fit because with my
UK qualifications, I was able to be admitted to practise as a lawyer without the need for further qualifications. I was Called to the Bar of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court,
BVI in 2010 and began practising in 2011 for some 4 years before moving into financial services.
  2. Take us through a recent workday:
No two work days are ever the same, it is a heady mix of client focused work, regulatory matters and generally the running and management of the BVI office. We are currently in the process of moving into larger premises due to our continued growth within the Territory, so in addition to juggling the above, my days are currently filled with
overseeing the move from all aspects.
  3. Who are the people who help you get things done, and how do you rely on them?
Whilst Clermont is a very close-knit company and all of the offices really do support one another, I have tremendous support from the other staff members in the BVI office. It is hard to find people who are constantly willing to go above and beyond. From generally assisting with the administration of our trusts and companies to dropping everything to run an urgent office errand, I am lucky to be able to say that the BVI staff provide immeasurable support on a daily basis.
  4. How were you affected by Hurricane Irma and how did you deal with this?
The aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria was a very difficult time. Clermont was absolutely wonderful in relocating the BVI staff to other offices firstly and foremostly
with our health and safety in mind and secondly to enable us to work, which ensured a smooth and continuous service to our clients. Our offices in the BVI were badly
damaged and so when we did return to the Territory, we had to relocate our office temporarily until our Harbour House location had been refurbished.
  5. Besides your phone, what gadgets or tools can’t you live without?
I absolutely love gadgets, although you said excluding my phone, that of course tops the list! Phone excluded, I do not know what I would do without my wireless Bluetooth
earphones, which help to keep me motivated and sometimes even dancing through a gym session! I also have a nifty little keyring power bank, which constantly comes in
handy. I am never far from some sort of gadget not least my Ipad Pro (my latest indulgence) and am not sure how well I would function without them (as terrible as that
sounds and equally hard to admit!).
